Volunteer Specialists

May 26th, 2009

Trying out in Sports PhotographyHandball Federation (Singapore) is on the look out for volunteer specialists! If you are a blogger, reporter, photographer and you love sports, you can be part of the team we are looking for!

These volunteer specialists will be trained in the area of sports blogging, sports journalism, sports photography, table officials and handball ambassadors. The discipline will be based on the volunteers’ interest as well as openings. After they are trained, they will be deployed by HFS during YOG 2010.

Since publicising this initiative to schools in early March, the response has been very positive. In fact, in the upcoming Singapore Handball Challenge Cup which will be held on 13 - 21 June 2009, Millennia Insitute will be sending in a team to volunteer for such a cause. The students will be given pointers by TILT, HFS’s Offical Public Relations Company.

Through such volunteering programme, outstanding students will be shortlisted and recommended by HFS to attend courses.

HFS is currently also in talks with RJC and ITE College East for their endorsement in such a programme. If you or your school is interested, you can drop us an email.

Challenging for a cause

May 6th, 2009

The IHF Head of Sports, Mr Ekke Hoffman and Mr. Patric Strub, Competition Director, IHF, was in Singapore from 3rd - 5th May for a site inspection.

The objectives of their visit was to survey training grounds as well as to see the progress of Handball Federation (Singapore)’s progress over the past year. In the packed 3 days that they were here, several discussions and meetings were held with representatives of Singapore Youth Olympic Organising Committee (SYOG), Singapore Sports Council (SSC) as well as HFS.

Mary Ang, HFS President, in the midst of discussion with IHF representatives

The discussions were fruitful and the future holds well for HFS. Not only was HFS able to learn from Mr. Ekke Hoffmann, who hails from Germany, on the promotion of handball, it was revealed that HFS will be hosting a Challenge Cup at the end of the year.

HFS had been in talks with International Handball Federation (IHF) and Asia Handball Federation (AHF) in hosting a Challenge Cup where every country in Asia will be invited to send in 2 representative teams. This Challenge cup will also consist of a coaching and referee course which will be conducted by IHF’s certified instructors. Through this course, IHF will then identify the potential candidates to take part in the 2nd Challenge Cup. This will then lead on to international certified handball referees or coaches.

This is in line with HFS’s direction in promoting handball to the masses. If anyone is interested in volunteering to be part of this challenging cause, feel free to contact HFS. We will be glad to have suitable volunteers as part of the team!

INTERVIEW WITH COACH MOON - TEAM GREEN Article contributed by Tan ZhiXiang, Nanyang Junior College (0813), HFS student reporter

May 5th, 2009

clip_image004Coach Ji Wook Moon, preferably known as ‘Moon’, is an enthusiast about handball ever since his university years. Becoming a handball player of Seoul National University in 1989, he has taken part in numerous numbers of handball competitions in Korea and even had exchange games with Japan’s universities. While as a player, Coach Moon even had the opportunity to coach his fellow players. After that, he temporarily left the handball court to serve his National Service. However, his devotion for Handball did not extinguish during that period. After 2 years, he joined the university’s alumni group and moved on to become the coach of Korea’s Woman’s National Team. He has also gained his “C” license coaching certificate from HFS last year.

Though Coach Moon is instructing other sports as well, Handball has always been his most favourite sport. Not because of each player’s outstanding skills, but the enjoyment and satisfaction coming from the game that “everyone plays together”. The teamwork, team spirit and team bonding drive him and his team to do their best for every game they play. It drives them to support each other morally, psychologically and physically even though they are worn out. It even drives them to become a closer team, or more than that, true friends, that can give advice, counsel and talk to. From the sport, ‘Moon’ has gained a lot of experiences and skills such as social relationships, approaching unfamiliar people and to contribute and sacrifice at times.

Moon took on the voluntary coach’s role in the youth team primarily because he feels that he has the responsibility to contribute. Given the chance, he wants to help the federation further promotes and improves the sport in Singapore. But the main reason is none other than his passion and love for it that inspires him to share with the youths to continue playing this sport.

Last but not least, a little gift from Coach Moon to our players.

“Handball is a team sport. You can learn how to become a social member from learning Handball. Through the process of learning this sport, there are 3 pains you will gain. Bad pain, from your injuries you sustained. Good pain, from your strengthened mind that make you think positive. And finally, he hopes that you all can frequently CHAM “PAIN” (champagne)!!!”

KEEP PUMPING ON! HANDBALL IS A SPORTS FOR YOU! (Article contributed by Kar Jun, final year student, SHATEC, HFS Online Publicity)

Handball Federation (Singapore) conducted an island-wide handball youth selection on 16th, 18th and 20th March 2009 during the school holidays. The 3 days selections attracted over 150 youths from close to 20 secondary schools, junior colleges and institutions. The stations masters were also impressed by their agility, strength and coordination. These natural attributes give the federation a great boost as it shows HANDBALL IS A SPORTS FOR OUR YOUTHS!

This island wide selection was successfully carried out with the kind venue support from ITE College East, Millennia Institute and Catholic High Secondary. The federation is further supported by Mr Seah Kian Peng, MP for Braddell Heights CC and Advisors to Marine Parade GROs and his team for permitting the youth trainings at Braddell Heights CC Handball CC.

The selected youths will be spilt into five teams and train under 5 coaches for the next 3 months. Their standard will be further assessed and overseas exposures are projected for the committed and talented youths.
